Time To Sell Some Domains!

And just like that, summer is over. It was a very strong one for domain names, and we now enter the last weeks of Q3 and the onset of Q4-Q1, which arguably are usually the best months for exact match and category defining domain name transactions. Last September, we closed the $15m Rocket*com transaction, in December 2023, Tiger*com and Fans*com, and in q1 2022, Home*com and Candy*com. I have said many times that deals for the most blue chip domain assets occur in every month, season and quarter, but very often, the immense amount of hard work, education, and as I often say, “marinating of” these domains with the likely buyer, comes to fruition in Q4 or Q1. This is not an asset class for the impatient, or those looking to force something to happen quicker than when it is ready, which I view as the point in time when the buyer and seller arrive at a place within the ZOPA (zone of possible agreement). It usually is the case that the seller is ready before the buyer, and the buyer needs to let the domain marinate enough that they know exactly what its value is, and how and where they will apply it, as well as have the comfort and liquidity to close the deal. I am as confident as I have ever been that with the oncoming force that AI is and will continue to be, and the reality that we have even gotten better at helping Founders, Senior Leadership, and investors understand the strategic importance of owning their exact match and category defining domain name, that we will see all the efforts leading to exciting, record domain transactions.

AI And The Evolution Of The Internet

Speaking of AI. I have been through all the eras of the “Internet”. Early on, it was instant messaging and email platforms; that was followed by e-commerce (Amazon and Ebay), then search engines, followed by DM’s (Skype) social media and video, and of course, the Iphone. Learning was relatively easy. AI is moving so much faster, and making impacts at a daunting pace, ones that can impact our everyday life in work and beyond. I am excited for my 24 year old son, who can experience this revolution starting in the first inning. This week, I watched Dharmesh Shah Inbound 25 Keynote speech on AI, and found it “must see TV”. By explaining how AI works, a step many may skip, it enhanced the efforts I have made to date learning and experimenting with AI. You can watch it here, https://lnkd.in/eEub5Vty.
