Episode 5: A Deep Dive into Premium Domain Name Transactions

This week, Larry fischer and I recorded episode 5 of our Hilco Digital Assets Random Thoughts Podcast. It was an intentionally different format than the first 4, during which we had guest CEO/Founders of companies that have acquired a premium exact match, category defining domain name and experienced major success with strong attribution to the domain asset. In this episode, we conducted a discussion on the key aspects of premium domain name transactions, hoping to shed some valuable insight to founders, management, venture investors, and domain name holders. The idea for this came to me after I recently attended the Internet Commerce Association meeting in Vegas, where I was asked to oversee an expert table on high end domain name sales. The table was packed and the conversation with many of my peers seemed to go well so I thought it was worth putting into a podcast. You can watch this on https://lnkd.in/en92WFSG (Episode 5) or listen to it on Apple/Spotify.

Embracing the Jerry Garcia Philosophy in Business

As many of you may know, I am a 103 show+ Grateful Dead show guy and as many deadheads do, guide a lot of my business and life philosophy off of the lyrics and spirit of the music. In March ’23, I oversaw the epic sale of Chat*com, one of the most important domain transactions ever considering the timing and significance of AI/Chatgpt. The buyer, as self disclosed, was Dharmesh Shah, the Co-Founder of Hubspot. The other genius Co-Founder of Hubspot, Brian Halligan, whom I have known since Hubspot was started at his apartment, was so influenced by the Grateful Dead that he wrote this awesome book, https://lnkd.in/gHCCT9WU, to which he credits so much of the Hubspot way. As Jerry Garcia says in the song Run for the Roses, “all good things in all good time.” This month, I have been working on some of the most rewarding, complex domain transactions (over $26M of deals) of my 28 years being involved in this amazing asset class, and alas this week, all is good. I often tell those I am working with or advising, to heed this Jerry Garcia mantra.

BAYC’s Pivotal Moments

Quick insight on Yuga Labs Bored Ape Yacht Club. We remain BAYC holders, and after a crazy level of success achieved, and then a frustrating 18 months, there is some much needed pivoting happening within the Bored Ape Yacht Club, and I am hopeful again. Anyone else have thoughts?
