The Rising Value of Premium Domain Names

There continues to be a strong increase in the asset value of premium domain names. For the past few years, we have seen the most upswing in exact match .com domain names. These tend to be words that are the brand name of multiple successful companies (i.e., Iconic.com); we keep a running list of recent deals at HilcoDigital.com/comps.

The Quiet Rise of Category Domain Names

While that has happened, exact match category domain names (i.e., Chocolate.com) have been a bit quieter and under the radar. Over 23 years of investing in and advising on premium domains, we at Hilco Digital Assets have seen all the cycles. While I believe exact match brandables are going to continue to increase in value, category domains will have a bigger upside movement in 2023.

Owning the Category: A Strategic Move

Owning the category .com domain for an entire industry is owning that brand, keyword, address, and credibility on the Internet forever. If you are a leader in your category, we should be discussing how you acquire your category name. If you have a brand and you do not own your exact match dot-com, you are leaving exponential enterprise value on the table and opening your company up to a strategic problem later.
