Data-driven Decision making

For those that read this post regularly, you know that my primary topics are the most valuable exact match and category defining domain name assets, tech and venture investing, family, and daily fantasy sports (DFS). There are actually many synergies between successful domain name investing and advising, and DFS. Both are centered around data-driven decision-making, risk management, market inefficiencies, a track record of successful gut checks, and, relying on experts. As a hard core DFS player, I find mis-priced players based on projections, and as a domain investor/advisor, I identify undervalued domain names and targeted acquirers that can win big. Success in both spaces depends on analyzing historical data, identifying patterns, and predicting future value to establish an edge. In DFS, I track injury reports, betting lines, and try to get on players early for optimal lineup construction. In domain investing and advising, I monitor trends and track successful companies that are being funded and growing, knowing that the most important strategic investment they can make is their exact match or category domain name. Both DFS and domains require patience and a solid strategy, making calculated bets based on deep research and pattern recognition. And with all of this, both require a strong ability to go with a “feeling”, to sense when something is right, established with years (26 for me in domains, 12 in DFS) of experience. In DFS, I also rely on several other experts, that I pay a lot to for their takes. With domains, no matter how good you may be, overseeing 7-8 figure domain transactions requires the utmost expertise and negotiation is much more art than science. This is why so many come to us at Hilco Digital Assets and nothing gives me more satisfaction than helping those who do win big, from our domain sellers to the companies that acquire them and establish the game changing advantages from doing so.

Paying Attention to the World

One of the habits I have developed over the years is to look at out of home ads (OOH) and the domains featured. I drove to/from Boston to NYC last week, and saw so many brilliant domain names featured on everything from billboards on Rt 95 to trucks driving by.
