The Rise in Value of Category Killer Domain Names

Over the past few weeks, I posted here about how I expect category killer domain names to rise strongly in value, how I negotiate using zones of possible outcome, and the mission-critical importance of patience when it comes to selling (and acquiring) the most valuable digital real estate.

Recent Transactions and the Importance of Patience

This week, Hilco Digital Assets and I oversaw the transaction for one of the most valuable category domains of the many of which I have been involved, Legal․com, and early this coming week will post about another phenomenal deal closing tomorrow. Category names are indeed the strongest domain assets, and patience does pay off.

Sometimes our deals happen fast. I had a few in the past year that sold in days to a couple of months from start to finish. Legal took 18 months but happened very quickly once negotiations began and was worth the wait for all. I have spoken and written about our process of casting a wide net to the right places and allowing great domains to “marinate”. Sometimes a buyer may want the asset but not be ready for many reasons. If someone else comes along before them, great but many need that patience.

Trusting the Process

My process has worked for me for 25 years, as an investor, buyer, and buy/sell side advisor. I have been a part of $495m in premium domain transactions, with more than most 7-8 figures. If someone decides to partner with HDA, they have been told the importance of committing to a long-term relationship. Many times it is fast. But if I am the jockey they choose, they should trust the process, our deep network of connections, and the nature of the domain name transaction’s timeframe zone.

As always, our domains are here.
