The Champion Changes Everything

Marinate, patience, relationship building, persistence, champion, and the art of negotiation are all terms I use often in this post or in talks, when discussing how some of my and Hilco Digital Assets most significant domain name transactions occur. This week, we received an email from a CMO of a mid-sized, fast growing company. I have a good memory (once upon a time it was a great one) and her name was not familiar but the company’s was. As we often do, we referenced our thoroughly maintained notes, and quickly realized that this was indeed a company that we had prior discussions about the domain with. At the time, they decided to pass on the price it would take to get a deal done. The call was from the new CMO, which is why I had not recalled the name. The gist is, a few key internal events plus her championing the value and importance of the domain to the business led to them circling back to negotiate a deal to move forward with the domain acquisition. Some times these deals happen quickly, other times they need time to make sense, whether that is from an understanding of the value or financial perspective, and sometimes there is just a chasm. For the domains we own or represent, our sole focus is on executing on the terms above.

Winning Big in Vegas

Speaking of relationship building and karma, a cool story unfolded this weekend. On Friday, I got an email from someone asking if we would be interested in helping sell his very valuable exact match domain. It was a busy day as I was traveling to Vegas that evening for an early, major Bday celebration, revisiting the Sphere for Dead and Company part 2, with family and friends. As I was boarding my plane, I called this person to apologize that I was not able to do so earlier, and would try the next day from Vegas. “You are going to Vegas, I am in Las Vegas”, he said. I woke up early to meet for coffee and later in the day he emailed me, “It was amazing timing. I think we covered a dozen phone calls worth of information in an hour. Things don’t usually work that well”. I am excited to oversee the sale of his very valuable domain name. (need to finalize the deal still)
