ChatGPT Suggests You Secure Your Brand Match .com

I hope you all had a delicious, happy Thanksgiving and helped make the day of someone who is having a hard time this year a little easier. I spent some of Friday experimenting with ChatGPT (now Chat*com, a deal we at Hilco Digital Assets oversaw) as it relates to the strategic importance of leading companies or those who are looking to become leaders and sustain that position, owning their exact match or category defining domain name. I asked about non .com TLDs. We already know that you cannot name 5 household brands or leading companies that are dot anything else, which alone says all you need to know as a CEO. Here is what ChatGPT said: “many companies use .com for their global audience but experiment with alternative TLDs for localized or specific services. A significant majority of category-leading companies use .com as their primary domain, often exceeding 90%, depending on the industry and region. Global Recognition: .com is synonymous with global credibility and professionalism. Default Choice: Consumers often assume .com is the default, which makes it critical for SEO and brand recall. Fortune 500 Companies: Over 95% use .com as their primary domain. Tech Leaders: approximately 90–95%.Media and Entertainment 85–90%.” I then asked for the “advantages of category leading companies using their one word exact match or category defining .com domain name”. It responded, “instant credibility and trust; high value; enhanced memorability; reduction of email risk; long term asset value; global scalability; market leadership; brand perception; advertising & marketing efficiency. It concluded “for category-leading companies, owning a one-word exact match or category-defining .com domain is more than a URL—it’s a competitive moat, a brand statement, and a marketing powerhouse. The upfront investment often pays dividends through brand equity, reduced marketing costs, and sustained market leadership.” Nuff said.
